The SDGs are an inclusive agenda, unifying us in addressing the fundamental reasons behind poverty and achieving positive change for both humans and the planet.

SDG
Initiatives

As a member of international society, Hirakawa Corporation endorses the SDGs
and is implementing a variety of initiatives to make that society better.

Reassuring Urban Development

  • 6 Clean Water and Sanitation
  • 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities

We address the urgent issues facing cities by understanding them and taking responsibility.

Example Initiatives

Livable Urban Development As a member of the South Midosuji Council, we are working with the city of Osaka to address the pressing issue of pedestrians and cyclists both using the sidewalk. Aiming to improve safety and comfort for both pedestrians and cyclists in a bustling area, we are making this location a model of transit space redevelopment.
Community Beautification We are taking a proactive role in community beautification efforts to build clean cities.
In the Minami area of Osaka, illegal bicycle parking and littering are becoming social problems.
We are developing the urban environment to avoid illegal bicycle parking and working with local shopping streets to have cleanups twice a month.
Clean Toilet Facilities We are investing heavily in safe water and clean toilet facilities and environments at our locations.
Safe water and hygienic facilities are foundational to achieving the health and sustainability SDGs.

Environmental Initiatives

  • 7 Affordable and Clean Energy
  • 14 Life below Water
  • 15 Life on Land

Conserving the planet and using it in a sustainable way prevents damage to planetary and human health.

Example Initiatives

Conservation of Marine Environment/Resources Since opening in 2010, Sankara Hotel & Spa Yakushima has made environmental conservation a main focus and taken donations from guests for purposes such as conserving the marine resources of Yakushima, a Natural Heritage site, and the habitat of sea turtles.
Conservation of Inland Environment/Resources Sankara Hotel & Spa Yakushima is involved in a project to plant more spider trees (crateva religiosa) as part of its goal to restore farmland to prevent over-use of certain mountain paths. We are planting spider trees and cultivating flower species to restore Yakushima to its former glory, a rich natural and living environment.
Clean Energy Investment We have a solar power generation and sale business.
By adopting and developing clean energy technology and infrastructure, we think we can accelerate the transition to sustainable energy systems.

Empowering Women in Society

  • 5 Gender Equality

We are empowering women and girls in order to achieve gender equality.

Example Initiatives

Promoting Empowerment of Women We are involved in the “Happy Woman Project” to form a society in which women can live empowered lives free from fear.
We also recommend maternity and childcare leave, and support women returning to work after childbirth.

Food Safety and Elimination of Food Waste

  • 2 Zero Hunger

Our mission is to reshape agriculture and Japanese eating.

Example Initiatives

Livestock We use IT to integrate management of everything from breeding and fattening to transportation and sale.
In order to eliminate wastage of precious food, we want to change thinking by beginning with our own business and lifestyles.

Support for Disaster-Struck Areas

  • 16 Peace, Justice and strong Institutions
  • 17 Partnership for the Goa

We will achieve our goals by helping each other.

Example Initiatives

Support for Disaster-Struck Areas We donated funds to relief efforts after the July 2018 west Japan floods, the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes and the Taiwan earthquakes.
Through donations and volunteering, we want to offer close, mutual aid to survivors to support restoration of peaceful, sustainable, normal life.
